Two Plein Air Art Exhibitions

The community-wide exhibition, 'Expressions - en plein air' will be open for public viewing on Friday, August 5. This is the fourth year we have put out the call to West Michigan artists of all ages to participate in this exhibit celebrating creating art outdoors. At the ACWL-Nuveen we take the show seriously but lighten up on the rules regarding what is considered "plein air". Many people associate "plein air" artwork with landscape painting - we stretch the rules to include any type of artwork that has been initiated outside. Artists then can fine-tune and finish their work indoors. We admire the determination, patience, and challenges of creating art out in the elements and love to showcase the diverse results. This year's exhibit has a bit of something for everyone. On display is an eclectic mix of imagery and mediums from traditional oil and watercolor paintings, to houses for small garden fairies.

With the help of the public, the ACWL-Nuveen presents four different awards for this exhibit: People's Choice, People's Choice Runner Up, Youth Artist, and an ACWL-Nuveen Award. To vote for your favorite piece, stop by the ACWL-Nuveen during gallery hours. The artwork will be on display through September 10 with a Reception and Awards Presentation on Friday, September 2 from 5:00-7:00 pm.

After visiting the ACWL-Nuveen gallery, take a trip out to the White River Light Station to view the Light Station Plein Air Exhibition. This exhibit is the result of our first-ever Light Station Plein Air Painting Competition that was held on July 22 - twelve artists spent several hours at the WRLS putting their personal spin on depicting the distinctive 147-year-old building and its environs. This exhibit will be on display through August 27 and viewers will have an opportunity to vote for their favorite piece in this exhibit in person or on our Facebook page. The 1st place winner will receive an overnight stay for themselves and a guest at the Big Sable Point Lighthouse apartment in Ludington, the 2nd place winner will earn two adult non-expiring passes for all four lighthouses maintained by the Sable Point Lighthouse Keepers Association, and the 3rd place winner will be awarded assorted plein air art supplies. All winners will be announced on August 20th.
