Visual Language Exhibition Awards
Since September 8, the ACWL-Nuveen has been hosting the regional juried exhibition – Visual Language. The show, which runs until October 24, was juried by Grand Rapids-based curator, Annamarie Buller. All the art for this exhibit employs text, language, words or poetry with the artists creatively incorporating it boldly, quietly or somewhere in-between.
After the careful review of the applications, Ms. Buller selected 25 works of art by 21 artists.
Because she reviewed the artwork via an online application platform, Ms. Buller stopped by ACWL-Nuveen recently to get a firsthand look at the 21 diverse works of art installed in our galleries. Viewing the artwork in person also helped her to determine which artists would receive awards. The $200 prize for Outstanding Media & Message went to Wendy Withrow of Grand Rapids for her skillfully conceived and hand-crafted accordion fold book entitled, 100 Days: The Persistent Undoing of Us. An Honorable Mention award went to Sarah Lynn B. (Boersen) from Grand Rapids for her video and linocut print entitled, Antiperfect. And H.J. Slider, from Caledonia, also received an Honorable Mention for their assembled sculpture entitled, YES: In My Backyard.

Commenting on the overall feel for the Visual Language exhibit, Ms. Buller had this to say, “This exhibition invites us to lean in with curiosity, to listen to the many ways language appears, fails, breaks open, and begins again. There is hope here – not as denial, but as practice. These works ask us to consider a more tender future, one that recognizes our shared vulnerability, our responsibility to one another, and the deep interconnection of all life on this planet.”
Please join us for a lively conversation with Juror Annamarie Buller and artists exhibiting in the show during the free closing reception on Saturday, October 24 from 1:00pm – 3:00pm. The discussion will start and 1:30pm.
The ACWL-Nuveen is very grateful to the White Lake Community Fund of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County who have generously sponsored this exhibit. Sponsorship of this exhibition enabled us to stretch beyond White Lake and attract new and diverse regional artists to our gallery - thank you!
