Job Overview

The Director is responsible for planning and administering activities, events, programs and activities of the Council and act as advocate for the arts in Whitehall and Montague, MI under the direction of the Board of Directors.

Responsibilities and Duties

Administration

  • Communicate and provide guidance to all committees and divisions to assure the Council’s goals can be achieved and problem areas addressed.

  • Ensure the ACWL - Nuveen has a visible, effective, and consistent public image.

  • Assist the financial committee in preparing and monitoring the annual budget.

  • Participate in staffing responsibilities (help with hiring, training, evaluating etc.) as needed.

  • Execute background checks on all staff.

  • Provide Board members and committees with necessary information. 

  • Assure the day-to-day operational needs are met.

  • Leadership role in expanding the ACWL – Nuveen’s mission and “vision” by evaluating and implementing the strategic plan and assuring it stays true to the Council’s mission and capabilities.

  • Serve as the principal spokesperson of the ACWL - Nuveen, promote and raise awareness of ACWL - Nuveen programs by reaching out to community and civic leaders, to corporations and foundations, to other non-profit organizations, and to individuals who could benefit from and/or contribute to the ACWL - Nuveen’s activities.

  • Maintain scheduling of events and represent the organization when needed.

  • Coordinate and maintain multiple calendars of the organization.

  • Approve a marketing strategy and coordination of all social media.

 

Fundraising/ Donor Relations

  • Research and write grants to support the organization.

  • Maintain accurate donor records and donor relations.

  • Produce and organize fundraising mailers and end of year gift receipts.

  • Secure Sponsors for ACWL – Nuveen programming.

 

Programming

  • Recruit new gallery artists, encourage effective communication between and among all gallery artists, recruit and promote new members and display works.

  • Program all Nuveen classes and events.

  • Develop, oversee, market, promote and evaluate quality arts-education programming including classes, workshops, seminars, exhibits, lectures, and community and fundraising events.

 

Qualifications

Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's degree in the arts, business administration, marketing, public relations, finance, or related field.

On-the-job experience may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis.

Experience, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Required

  • Experience in event planning.

  • Experience working with volunteers.

  • Strong and effective oral and written communication skills.

  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

  • Strong computer skills including Google Docs, excel, Microsoft, and Gmail.

  • Ability to prioritize work, delegate duties appropriately, and manage time effectively.

  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality of sensitive data without exception.

 

Preferred: Experience in marketing/public relations, graphic design, and social media

Physical Demands

  • Visual acuity, manual dexterity, hearing, driving, standing, walking, sitting, stooping, bending, and lifting up to 30 lbs.

Working Conditions

  • Salary position (35,000-37,000 depending on experience); average of 40 hours per week.

  • Erratic/flexible schedule will be required to maintain effective operations of the organization.

  • Work involves frequent interaction with volunteers, representatives of non-profit agencies, elected officials, and the general public.

  • Must effectively address patrons’ and/or board/management expectations.
