Slow and Steady Progress Puts Wind in our Sails

Thanks to the generous support of community members, the City of Whitehall, and the White Lake Community Fund of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, we are well on our way to bringing the Sailboat/Trees sculpture home to Covell Park!

Sailboat/Trees was designed by George Ramsay and installed in 2010. After many years of Michigan weather, it came time to take the sculpture off-site and have the surface refinished. Upon removing it earlier this year, we ran into some unexpected challenges. The concrete footings needed to be replaced and new anchor bolts had to be set - resulting in an additional $7,000 worth of expenses.

But luckily, this community stepped up and progress is being made! Just this week, the new anchor bolts - courtesy of Shoreline Metal Fabricators - were set and the concrete footings were poured by Shugars Masonry. Now, we wait for the concrete to cure while Greg Tuggle and his team at Painting Services of West Michigan finishes the complex job of stripping off the old powdercoating and applying two layers of 2-part catalyzed epoxy primer and three coats of 2-part catalyzed polyurethane. Check out some progress photos below - the new improved color is stunning!

We hope to see Sailboat/Trees back at Covell Park this fall - stay tuned and watch the site.
