Unique Art Book Making Opportunity

The ACWL-Nuveen is excited to be offering a special workshop – Exploring Book Forms, Variations on the Concertina Fold – August 27 – 28. The workshop will be led by talented artist and educator Honore Lee. Honore, who is based in Grand Haven, will bring her vast experience as a handmade bookmaker, printmaker and mixed media artist to the class. Honore has been a Book Arts Instructor at Oxbow School of Art in Saugatuck since 2021. In the class she will share with students the rich history of the concertina (accordion) fold as one of the earliest book forms and how artists have embraced this format to tell creative and compelling stories. The beauty of the concertina fold format is that it is expansive, enabling the book to be viewed flat or stretched out allowing the book to stand upright. These options allow for a panoramic theme or a sequential theme with front and back dual viewing.

Honore will teach students 5 different variations of the basic concertina fold to prepare them for a deeper exploration into their own unique fully developed handmade book. Students are encouraged to bring their own personal imagery, text, and materials to make their custom book but Honore will also bring an assortment of special items to work with.

The class will meet on two days August 27 and 28 from 10:00am – 3:00pm. This in-depth focus will enable all the students to experiment and explore the concertina book technique under the guidance of an experienced bookmaker.
