Insights on Intuition

Sharing their personal stories about tapping into intuition for artistic guidance, artists Adam Dahlstrom and Laura Korch spoke to a crowd of 50 interested guests at an ACWL-Nuveen reception on Saturday, September 20. Adam, a mixed-media artist from Muskegon and Laura, a sculptor from Traverse City had never met before their work was curated for a two-person guest exhibit – Intuitive Abstraction. This guest show was generously sponsored by Howmet Aerospace Foundation, whose funding helped the ACWL-Nuveen mount a more ambitious exhibition. Laura and Adam work in such different mediums and they approach the idea of abstraction in unique yet strikingly similar ways. They share a love of detail, pattern, color and texture. The concept of time is very evident in both artists’ work as it plays a crucial role in how the artwork is made and viewed. It asks the viewer to pause, slow down and study all the beautiful nuances and visual messages.

Because of the Howmet Aerospace Foundation sponsorship, we were able to coordinate extra educational offerings with the guest artists. On Friday, September 19th Laura, who runs the ceramic and sculpture programs at Northwestern Michigan College, offered a fun and informative workshop on creating unique decals for custom ceramic work. The workshop was offered in coordination with Kim Funk and Peter Johnson at Terrestrial Forming. And tomorrow Saturday, October 4, Adam will be offering a workshop from 10:00am – 12:00pm entitled Picture Framing for Artists. We still have spaces in the workshop so please sign up and take advantage of working with Adam who has been a skilled picture framer for over 25 years. https://www.artswhitelake.org/events-1/picture-framing-for-artists
