ARTISTS – the ACWL-Nuveen is excited to be organizing a themed juried exhibition entitled, Visual Language which will be on display September 8 – October 24. We are interested in showcasing artists who are making original artwork which somehow incorporates text, words, language, and/or poetry. The integration of text can be anywhere on the spectrum from bold to subtle and in any 2D, 3D or digital media. We have opened the call to include artists who live in the Lake Michigan region, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin. Also, artists, there will be a $200 prize awarded for outstanding artwork.

The juror for this exhibit is independent curator from Grand Rapids, Michigan, Annamarie Buller. Ms. Buller has over 24 years of experience advocating for artists and curatorial work in the arts. In 2000 she began organizing Free Radical Gallery in Grand Rapids, a series of art shows that transformed non-traditional spaces and vacant storefronts into galleries for contemporary artists in all stages of their development. Her work on the Free Radical Gallery led to the creation of Avenue for the Arts which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary in 2024. She has played a major role in Avenue for the Arts’ 106 Gallery where she has mounted innovative exhibits showcasing underrepresented voices. One of her more notable being a recent exhibit entitled – Visible Vital Unignorable – featuring LGTBQ Michigan artists -  www.avenueforthearts.co/visible. In her bio-Ms. Buller states that, "she is particularly passionate about artwork that involves political themes and intentionally seeks out the storytelling artists from marginalized communities.”

This exhibit has been generously sponsored by the White Lake Community Fund of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County.
