Class Description

Ages 18+ Learn the fundamental techniques of creating pottery on a pottery wheel in this 4-week class. Participants will learn how to center clay on the wheel, shape it into various forms such as bowls, cups, and vases, and trim and finish their pieces. The class is designed for individuals with little to no experience in pottery, as well as those who have some basic knowledge and want to further develop their skills. Throughout the class, participants will receive guidance and instruction from an experienced pottery instructor, who will demonstrate techniques and provide individualized feedback. By the end of the class, participants will have gained a solid foundation in wheel throwing and will have created several functional and decorative pottery pieces. Class fee includes instruction, multiple firings, glazes, and 25 lbs of clay per student.  This class will meet Thursdays April 2 through 23 at Terrestrial Forming Pottery Studio. Students will need to pick up their finished pieces following a final glaze firing that will happen AFTER the final class. Students will be notified when their pieces are ready for pick up.   Minimum: 4 Maximum: 5 Pay What you Can Pricing: This class is supported by the ACWL-Nuveen Scholarship Fund. If you cannot afford the class fee, we will use $75 of scholarship funds to bring the class fee down to $125. To receive this discount, please enter the promo code 'wheel75' at checkout. About the Instructor: Like many great love stories, Kim’s love for ceramics began in high school. She loved the limitless dynamics of the art form, and it’s been her passion ever since. Recently,  she’s been apprenticing with Peter "The Potter" Johnson, the local master potter working at Terrestrial Forming in Whitehall. She’s now excited to begin her own journey creating and teaching pottery to other art lovers. ACWL-Nuveen classes are supported by the Nuveen Benevolent Trust, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, the National Endowment for the Arts and CatchMark Technologies.
