Class Description
Ages 16+ $50, $45 for ACWL Members Using wool “prefelts” and wool and silk embellishment fibers, students will create a flower pin/brooch that can accessorize clothing, a scarf, or a hat. We’ll be employing basic wet felting techniques of water, soap, and agitation to shrink and form fibers into a durable, shaped fabric that will then be layered and-hand stitched into the final piece. Students will have lots of options for colors, petal shapes, and other embellishments. While we will finish the piece in class, it will need a couple of days to dry at home! Class minimum:4 Class maximum: 8 About the Instructor: Melinda Schertenlieb has been working in the fiber arts most of her life: sewing, embroidering, knitting, crocheting, etc. She began exploring felting over 10 years ago, and has taken a number of workshops (both group and individual) to learn techniques in wet felting. Using unspun wool fibers, silk fibers, and other textural elements, Melinda primarily wet felts handbags, vessels, scarves, and brooches/pins. ACWL-Nuveen classes are supported by the White Lake Community Fund of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, CatchMark Technologies, Michigan Arts & Culture Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nuveen Benevolent Trust.
