Each participant will create four unique batik pieces while learning how to build depth through layers of color and design. This fun and immersive experience encourages creativity, experimentation, and a deeper appreciation for the timeless process of batik. Class minimum: 4 Class maximum: 10 About the Instructor: Julie Westmaas's passion for fiber art began at age eight, when her grandmother taught her embroidery, and it has continued to grow ever since. Over the years, she's explored a wide range of techniques—quilting, felting, batik, and mixed media—creating work that spans landscapes, florals, portraits, abstracts, and more, often inspired by my own photography. Julie works in many forms, including framed quilted pieces, fabric vessels, wearable art, and woven designs, drawn to the tactile possibilities of fiber and surface. While she's experimented with other mediums, fiber remains her most authentic voice. Julie also teaches fiber arts and batik, and exhibits her work in galleries and art centers throughout West Michigan. ACWL-Nuveen classes are supported by the White Lake Community Fund of the Community Foundation for Muskegon County, CatchMark Technologies, Michigan Arts & Culture Council, the National Endowment for the Arts and the Nuveen Benevolent Trust.
