Line Etching Workshop

Class Description

Ages 16+ $175, $157.50 for ACWL Members Pay-what-you-can: $100 with Etch100 - Students must register by Wednesday, September 30 to ensure we have the correct amount of supplies. - The etching process has gone nearly unchanged since the 15th century. In this class, students will learn to create an etching on a copperplate, just like the most famous etcher, Rembrandt van Rijn, did in the 1600s. To create an etching, a copperplate is first coated with a resist ground. Then, a drawing is transferred to the plate and traced over with an etching needle that exposes the copperplate. This plate is then etched in ferric chloride. Etch time determines the depth of the line. The plate is then cleaned, inked and printed using an etching press. Overall, it is an exciting process from drawing to pulling a print from the plate, and there are many variations that can be added. All materials are provided. This class is appropriate for beginning and advanced students. There will be a break for lunch. Feel free to bring a bag lunch or plan to run across the street to Subway or Wesco!
