Class Description

Ages 12-18 Does the blank page intimidate you as a writer? Ever wish that the process of writing was a bit more arts-and-crafty? Erasure poetry can be an excellent way to deepen your creativity by getting your hands dirty and using the work of other writers as a starting point! In this engaging two-session class, you'll create original erasure poems, learn about theories of erasure and poetics, and experiment with different types of erasure in a hands-on setting led by a master teacher and published author. You'll work with texts you might love and those you might loathe—through your own point of view, you'll transform printed text into powerful poetic statements all your own, some so beautiful you just might want to frame them, give them as gifts, or attempt to have them published! Minimum: 4 Maximum: 12 About the Instructor: Dr. Caitlin Cowan has taught writing for almost 20 years at all levels and at various institutions, including the University of North Texas, Interlochen Center for the Arts, and Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, where she founded the Creative Writing program. She is the author of Solitary (YesYes Books, 2027) & Happy Everything (Cornerstone Press, 2024) and is currently seeking representation for her nonfiction debut. Of her work, award-winning poet B. H. Fairchild has written, "Her language is rich and often deeply witty, seducing the reader into the poem's embrace, its song of life, a life fully lived on at least eleven different levels." You can learn more about her at caitlincowan.com. ACWL-Nuveen Spreak Break Art classes are supported by Seaver's Lawn Service. https://www.seaverslawnservice.com/
