About the event

Join us at the White River Light Station to learn how to capture beach and dune scenes quickly using a simple setup of watercolor paper, ink pen and a water brush. Students will learn how to use different line sketching techniques such as hatching, continuous, weighted and broken lines to create expressive studies of the subject matter all around us. Class will begin with a brief talk led by the Light Station Curator, Matt Varnum. MJ will then give a quick demonstration, followed by suggestions on how to format a composition. Participants will then be able to wander off to sketch locations of their choice. We will gather at the end of class for a show and tell and Q&A. All supplies are included!

Students under the age of 16 may attend if accompanied by an adult.

About the Instructor:

Mary Jo (MJ) Ernst grew up in West Michigan and has been sketching her whole life. She uses all types of mediums in her artwork. Ink, especially solubles, is her preferred choice for quick sketching.  Her sketch style is whimsical and impressionistic. MJ encourages anyone, all skill levels, to pick up a pen, pencil or brush to get started and make a mark!
