About the event

In this two-session class, students will learn the basics of photography and have the opportunity to try their hand at shooting in specific styles and editing their photographs. Students should have or borrow a camera with the option to use manual settings, such as a film SLR, DSLR, or Mirrorless camera, to use in this class.

Class 1 will explore the fundamentals of photography such as shutter speed and aperture. The goal is to get you out of shooting in program or auto mode! We will set up a still-life to photograph, as well as take turns shooting portraits.

You will be asked to take additional still-life and portrait photos between class 1 and 2.

Class 2 will cover how to get the images off your camera and onto your computer for basic editing. If you have a laptop, bring it! If your camera came with editing software, download it onto your computer! It's likely that students will have a variety of editing programs, but the basics will remain the same - no matter which program you are using!

This class will meet on Tuesdays, February 8 & 15 from 6:00-8:00pm.

Minimum: 4

Maximum: 8

About the Instructor:

Denise McElrath first started exploring photography in a highschool yearbook class. She was then accepted into an after-school photography club where she learned how to use a 35mm film camera, develop film, and print in a darkroom. As an adult, her hobby grew into owning a portrait studio and teaching adult education classes.

COVID-19 Considerations:

All students must wear a mask, regardless of vaccination status.

ACWL-Nuveen classes are supported by the Nuveen Benevolent Trust, the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts
